Our Story

Apsara Ethical Gifts began in Sydney in 2017 selling a small number of products we had imported from Sri Lanka at Fair Trade markets and pop-ups. It was founded by Asha, who recently armed with a Masters in International Community Development, began to implement her vision of mainstreaming Fair Trade and ethical gifts. Her life partner Darren, an anthropologist, lent a hand from the beginning and has since taken on a major role in the enterprise.

Today, Apsara Ethical Gifts has grown into an online gift store and bricks and mortar trader in Sydney. We were part of the Fair Trade Cove in Lane Cove and Balgowlah until early 2021 when we opened our new retail experience in Paddington - Ethical by Nature. We are proud to be able to offer you an alternative to the damaging impacts of mainstream consumerism and to provide positive shopping solutions to reducing poverty and our impacts on other life and the planet.

We support sustainable jobs for artisans in communities where opportunities are scarce or simply nonexistent. We also support artisans who are committed to upcycling and recycling by creating new products from waste. These social enterprises support a holistic approach, making it not only about paying a fair wage, but also building capacity, committing to work with marginalised people who need these opportunities the most, being good stewards of the environment, respecting cultural traditions, working collaboratively and engaging the producers in the decision-making process and developing long-term relationships among other things.

Your purchase will support people living in poverty, who now have an opportunity to earn an income, a living wage. With this income the family and community can buy food, have somewhere to live, purchase healthcare, send their children to school; and most importantly live with dignity - all the things we take for granted.

We also commit to offering our customers high-quality, unique, handmade and marketable fair trade, recycled and/or ethically produced gifts and fashion items.

Our business is carbon offset in the electricity that we use and the shipping services we engage to get our products to our customers. We are also working hard to extend carbon offsetting to all of our operations including the orders we receive from overseas by carbon offsetting through Trace. To learn more about how we work as a business, how e select the merchandise that we stock, and our commitment to the environment, see Ethical Shopping.
